The Netherlands Network of Economics (Netwerk Algemene en Kwantitatieve Economie, commonly known by its acronym as NAKE) provides a national graduate program in Economics and Econometrics in the Netherlands. This network is a joint initiative of various Economics Faculties in the Netherlands. It started out in 1986 as the Network of Quantitative Economic, and subsequently merged in 1991 with the Network of General Economics to become the Netherlands Network of Economics. In May 2005, the Economics Faculties associated in the Tinbergen Institute stepped out of the Network, which is now serving the Economics Faculties in the center and eastern part of the country.
The graduate program of NAKE is meant to provide a high quality and comprehensive teaching program and challenging research environment for Research Masters/MPhil and Ph.D. students in the Netherlands. The network intends to achieve this in a number of ways. First, NAKE offers a first-rate teaching program aimed at second-year students. These courses are meant to be state of the art, and are taught in Utrecht. Cooperation at a national level provides great advantages, not only in terms of efficiency (economies of scale), but also because the best experts in a wide range of subjects can be recruited within one centralized program. By offering a broad program of field and topics courses, NAKE students are exposed to a great variety of recent developments in different fields of economics. This should both stimulate them to pursue their own research activities and further widen their education, thus making them more flexible in their future careers.
Second, each year NAKE organizes an intensive workshop where international top-experts give courses to the Students and Fellows of NAKE. Thus students are brought into contact with leading economist from all over the world, and are given an education that is second to none. Normally, workshops contain courses on micro, macro, econometrics and an elective course. Students are expected to write a thorough report on one of the lecture series. The best of such reports are published in NAKE Nieuws.
Third, NAKE organizes the annual NAKE Day, a one-day conference for all economists in the Netherlands. Students can present their research proposal plus their first paper at the NAKE Research Day.
Last but not least, NAKE offers an extensive base of Fellows (153 in total), who as a group span almost all areas of economics. This means that Ph.D. students do not have to rely solely on their thesis supervisor(s) for advice concerning their research, but can draw upon the expertise other Fellows.
