The aim of the NAKE courses is to deepen and broaden the knowledge of the NAKE students, building on the first-year M.Phil courses offered by the participating graduate schools. By offering a broad menu of specialization courses (including field and topics courses), the students are exposed to a great variety of recent developments in different areas of economics. This should both stimulate their current research and make them more flexible in their future careers.
NAKE offers field and topics modules (see Course Program 2008/09) aimed at second-year M.Phil students. A stable core of field courses will be offered each year, whereas the topics modules can vary from year to year. The Director of NAKE together with the Educational Committee decides on the course program.
The workload of a field course is 6 ECTS and that of a topics course is 3 ECTS.
NAKE's course program is aimed at second-year M.Phil students who have fulfilled all first-year requirements at their home (or at a partner) institution. Lecturers of NAKE courses are encouraged to clearly state any course prerequisites so as to preclude that students register without the required background.
The teaching program consists of five blocks allocated to two semesters. Two blocks are scheduled in the fall semester and the other three blocks in spring. Blocks consists of six weeks of lectures of 2 hours each. In between blocks there is one week reserved for exams. For information on the exact dates, see next year's calendar.
Teaching is centralized and takes place at the University College Utrecht campus (next to James Boswell Institute, see Map of Utrecht). NAKE courses are always on Friday.
Lecturers receive a financial compensation from NAKE for their lectures.
Students enroll for each course two weeks before the start of the course. Lecturers receive a list of participants one week before the start of the course and are kindly requested to keep an attendance list each week. They can send this information to the secretariat immediately after the course.
If two week before the start of the lectures five or more students have enrolled, the course will be offered as scheduled. In case of less than five participants, it may be decided, after consultation with the lecturer, to cancel the course. In that case, the lecturer will be asked whether it is possible to offer the course in another suitable form (for example, through independent study or a reduced number of meetings) to the interested students.
All courses should be concluded by an exam and grade. The teacher decides on the mode of examination (a written exam, oral exam, research paper, etcetera), which should be communicated to the students before the start of the course. Short assignments/homeworks may count toward the grade.
It is very important that grades are available on time, facilitating the monitoring of students' study progress. Therefore, NAKE asks lecturers to strictly adhere to the following deadlines for grade submissions:
Each course is evaluated shortly after the last lecture via an evaluation form. The results of this evaluation are sent to the lecturer and their respective head(s) of department. If necessary, the NAKE director may provide suggestions for improvement of the course. When the same course is scheduled again, the director will inquire about the improvements made.
It is very important that the description of the courses in the program is clear and enables the students to make a well-informed choice. Therefore, please be as specific as possible in your description of the course. For each course offered, the following information should be supplied:
Most class rooms are equipped with overhead projects. Lecturers that want to use audiovisual equipment such as beamers and VCRs should inform the NAKE secretariat before the start of the course.
