The History of NAKE

When the ‘two-tiered’ educational system was introduced at Dutch universities in the mid-1980s a number of initiatives were taken for graduate education and research in the Netherlands. The inter-university Network of Quantitative Economics was one of those initiatives. Other examples were: the Tinbergen Institute (a joint initiative of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, Free University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam), and the CentER for Economic Research at Tilburg University.

The Network of Quantitative economics launched its activities in September 1986. Later, in the autumn of 1988, the Network of general Economics was established. This network for graduate education in economics had the same objectives as the Network of quantitative Economics but aimed to cover non-quantitative fields of interest in general economics. In September 1991 these networks merged, and so became the Netherlands network of Economics, generally known as ‘NAKE’. In May 2005, the Faculties of Economics of the Tinbergen Institute stepped out of the Network whereas Nijmegen University joined it. NAKE now has become smaller network focused on Economics Faculties in the Eastern part of the Netherlands.
