Old style education at universities in the Netherlands can be characterized as a two-tiered system. The first phase (of four years) leads to the doctorandus degree. After this, a minority of graduates can have further postgraduate education. This minority can be split up into two groups. The first group wants to specialize for a professional qualification, such as that required to become a secondary school teacher or a medical specialist, and the other group wants to carry on at university, do research and write a Ph.D. thesis. Both of these groups will require further university education before embarking on their chosen careers. This is provided by the "second-phase" of university education.
The structure of the educational system has changed recently. In the new setup, a Bachelor's education of 3 years, a 2-year Research Masters and a 3 years Ph.D. track will be offered. NAKE supplies field and topics courses in the second year of the Research Masters and the first year of the new Ph.D. track.
