The Netherlands Network of Economics believes it is very important that its graduate students are taught not only by Dutch experts but also by leading international experts in the field of economics and econometrics. Although NAKE encourages graduate students to present their work and acquaint themselves with recent developments in research at international conferences, this does not necessarily mean that they have the chance to obtain a detailed understanding of what leading experts are doing at the moment. Hence, NAKE organizes workshops once a year (in June) where some of the best economists in the world are invited to present their work to NAKE's graduate students.
The Director invites four Visiting Professors for each workshop. Typically, the Visiting Professors work in different fields of economics and econometrics to provide for a broad range of topics. The workshop may also be focussed on a common theme, but also in that case the aim is to have all different fields of economics represented. Each visiting professor teaches a course of five two-hour lectures. A workshop lasts for only one week, making the program intensive, and therefore requires that students do so preparatory reading beforehand.
Although the workshops are primarily intended for first-year and second-year graduate students, third-year and fourth-year students and fellows are also welcome (subject to space constraints). In principle, outsiders, that is, those who are not a student or fellow of NAKE, are also welcome to the workshops if space permits. Outsiders, however, have to pay a fee of 2,000 euro per workshop. Please contact the NAKE secretary, Kristel Suijs-Peijs, for further information
For students working in areas related to that of the Visiting Professor it is very useful to to obtain his/her personal advice on their (current or planned) research. For that reason, NAKE also organizes research consultations with one of the professors during the week of the workshop. Students who want to have a research consultation are asked to hand in a short description of their research plan.
The workshop location rotates around the participating Dutch universities and organizations. The workshops feature a social program, which, typically includes a cocktail party (on Monday), an excursion (on Wednesday), and a dinner (on Thursday).
