| In Memoriam: Ton
Steerneman
NAKE-fellow Ton
Steerneman (51) passed away on September 28, 2005. He was Professor
of Applied Statistics and Life Insurance at the Faculty of Economics
at the University of Groningen. Using his extensive knowledge of
mathematical statistics, he was able to formulate real-life problems
as statistical problems, and then to interpret statistical results
in their original practical setting. He has published some fifty
articles, with many different co-authors on various topics such as
quality control, medical decision making, and multivariate analysis,
in a wide range of journals (HOMO, Linear Algebra and Its
Applications, Expositiones Mathematicae, Medical Decision Making to
mention a few). He was best known for his willingness to help
everyone who came to his office with questions related to statistics
or insurance. With this enthusiasm, he supervised eight PhD-theses
during his career. He has served as vice-chairman of the Netherlands
Society for Statistics and Operations Research, and has been
associate editor of Statistica Neerlandica. He will be remembered as
a friendly, knowledgeable, open, and cheerful colleague.
NAKE
Although NAKE's future looked bleak at the beginning
of 2005, the positive impulse given to it by the deans of the
"Eastwing" Economics Faculties has put the Network back on the Dutch
academic map. NAKE will continue its activities in a new, slimmed
down form. Our core activities--courses in Utrecht, workshops, and
the NAKE Research Day--will continue. All NAKE fellows have received
a letter providing further information about the new setup of NAKE.
During the Annual Meeting of Members (on October 21) these issues
will be further discussed.
In the academic year 2005/06, we will offer a high quality
educational program aimed at second-year M.Phil students and old
style Ph.D. students. The program consists of 9 field courses (of 6
ETCS each) and 5 topics courses (of 3 ECTS each).
Once a year, NAKE organizes a workshop (in June), where some of
the world's best economists are invited to present their work to
NAKE's graduate students.
The NAKE Research Day keeps its nation-wide coverage. Young and
experienced researchers can present their research at this day. The
NAKE Day has been scheduled for October 21, 2005.
