NAKE offers a broad program of specialized courses aimed at second-year Research Master and Ph.D. students so that they get exposed to a great variety of recent developments in different fields of economics. This should both stimulate their current research and make them more flexible in their future careers.
In the academic year 2008/09 NAKE has scheduled about six field courses (of 6 ECTS each) and nine topics courses (of 3 ECTS each). The Educational Committee of NAKE together with the Director of NAKE decide on the composition and contents of the educational program. The course program consists of a mix of courses in the field of macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics courses, and specialized topics. The composition of the field course program does not change much from year to year, but the topics modules can change depending on developments in fields and demand by graduate schools.
Teaching is centralized and takes place in Utrecht (at the Utrecht University College Campus). The educational calendar is organized so that the teaching program consists of five parts ("blocks") of six weeks of 2 hours lectures each. Two of the parts are scheduled in the fall semester and the other three blocks in the spring semester. At the end of each part there is a week dedicated to exams.

Course Level
The courses are aimed at second-year Research Master (so-called M.Phil. students), old-style
Ph.D. students, and any other interested Ph.D. students that want to brush up their
knowledge in a particular field.
Entry Requirements
Students who want to participate in the course program should have completed the first year of the MPhil program at their home institution
or (at the minimum) have taken core courses in macroeconomic, microeconomics, econometrics
and electives. Lecturers can set specific entry requirements applying to their course.
Therefore, students are advised to carefully check the entry requirements at the home page
of each course.
Examination
Written exam or a combination of a written, take-home exam or a paper (possibly also
including home works). Week numbers 7 and 13 are reserved for exams (mid-term and final,
respectively). The mid-term exam is optional. See NAKE's
academic
calendar.
Participation Fees
The Economics Faculties participating in NAKE pay a fee on behalf of their
students for course participation. In view of this, we kindly ask you to adhere to the
specified registration and course drop deadline (see below). Note that students
from the Tinbergen Institute and other external institutions pay an external
course fee that is higher than NAKE's internal tariff. However, TI students and NAKE
students can participate for free in Netspar topics courses.
Registration
Note that you have to register as a NAKE
student before you can enroll for NAKE courses. Students should register for courses before
the specified registration date.
Registering for a course
will imply that your home institution will be charged a fee after week 2 of the course.
Students are offered to the possibility to drop a course within 2 working days after the
first class. A course can be dropped by notifying the NAKE secretariat in writing.
